The Arabic word Madrassa refers to any type of secular or religious educational institution - for elementary instruction or higher learning. However over the years, the term has garnered some negative attention.
Despite the widespread perception that Madrassas are an antiquated concept and in some cases being alleged breeding grounds for terrorism - due mainly to their refusal to modernise, their numbers in South Asian countries continue to rise.
